Is AI safe for kids? What parents should check
By Arif Ul Islam · Updated
Whether an AI app is safe for a child depends less on the AI itself than on how the app uses it. Check four things: whether your child can chat with the AI directly, what is screened before your child sees it, what personal data the app stores about your child, and whether there are ads or purchases on the child's screen. In ThinkForTreats, only the parent types to the AI, and the child only taps answers.
Can your child talk to the AI directly?
The biggest difference between kids' apps that use AI is whether the child types to it. An open chat box can be steered anywhere, by curiosity or by accident, and no filter catches everything.
In ThinkForTreats the AI works only for the parent. The parent types the reward, the AI writes the quest, and the child only taps answers to multiple-choice puzzles. There is no text box on the child's side.
What gets screened, and when?
Ask whether the app checks both what goes into the AI and what comes out, and whether that happens before a child can see it.
ThinkForTreats screens the parent's reward before a quest is written and screens the generated quest for age-appropriate content before it is saved. If a quest can't be generated properly, it fails outright rather than showing a half-finished one.
What does the app know about your child?
A kids' app rarely needs a real name, birthday or school. The less it stores, the less there is to leak or misuse.
ThinkForTreats stores a nickname and a cartoon avatar your child picks from a preset set. There are no photo uploads, and no real names, birthdays or schools.
What can your child do alone?
Look at the child's screen specifically: are there ads, purchases, links out of the app, or anything that unlocks without you?
ThinkForTreats has no ads and nothing for sale on the child's screen. A finished reward, and deleting anything, needs the parent's private 4-digit PIN.
Common questions
- Can AI say something inappropriate to my child?
- Any AI can produce something unexpected, which is why the design matters. When the child can't chat with it and every quest is screened before it's saved, the child only ever sees reviewed multiple-choice puzzles.
- What does the AI see about my child?
- Only what it needs to write the story: the reward you typed, the difficulty you picked and your child's nickname, so the adventure can star them. It writes the quest before your child starts, and your child's answers are never sent to it.
- What age is AI-generated content suitable for?
- It depends on the app, not the technology. ThinkForTreats writes puzzles for ages 5–10 at the difficulty you pick, and your child never sees the AI itself.
